Panasonic AG-DV2500 MiniDV and DVCAM PRO VCR
The Panasonic AG-DV2500 MiniDV and DVCAM PRO VCR has a unique ability to conform to large and small cassette sizes in an instant. Let's watch it work and also see some ancient "school footage" on a SONY DVCAM tape found in the wild. I purchased two of these units on eBay, one has a completely jacked up loading mech. The other had a jamming pinch roller swing arm, which needed to be lubricated and worked free.

Great video. I was sent this very same model of u-Matic some weeks ago and have powered it up and been testing it this morning. Yet to connect to a monitor, but all mechanical functions work well. Enjoyed watching your mechanical tests and playback. I have three larger u-Matics as well. I too have come across image bleed and in some cases, loss of colour. The answer to that was that the particular recordings were high band. My large machines are all low band. Not yet sure if this machine is high or low band, but I will test the playback again soon to check. I have many different format VCRs in my collection, hoping to find a u-Matic with high band playback soon - but without the colossal price tag! 😊

As an italian, the last video I expected to see here was a music video from Coro SAT 😂 The SAT Choir is the best and most popular "a cappella" choir for traditional italian mountain songs, and I think they still exist today. They're really, really good, if you like this particular folk music, of course. Thanks for this video, I had no idea the TeD existed... it's incredibly fascinating.

I still remember when this unit was demonstrated in the Kaufhof department store in Hagen, Germany, located south of Dortmund, in 1972. A childrens movie was played. It kept on skipping frames or occaisonally got stuck on one frame. Picture and sound quality were satisfactory as the medium was fresh.

fun note the first multi-format player was the 1903 Styx phonograph the more expensive in the range could play 4 formats 3 sizes of wax cylinders and disc records the lowest-cost machine could just play standard-size wax cylinders. BTW good luck trying to find pictures online these machines are as rare as rooster eggs! they are in the Fabrizio Phonograph compendium series of books but nowhere else I have seen only one in real life in nearly 40 years of antique phonograph collecting the prize on the machine was 10,000 dollars! which isn't as bad as it sounds since through my research I guess there are only about 100 of these in the world. now rare does not mean expensive when people know it's rare it's going to be pricy but if nobody knows yet... I bought an acuston front mount horn phonograph in 2018 for 50 dollars well... my research shows there are only about 3 of these machines left in existence! but nobody knew that yet at the time I was very lucky indeed!!! now every phonograph collector and their aunt are looking for this machine... no one since my find in 2018 has found one, one collector in a forum even offered 100.000 pounds! he removed this offer 10 months later well, nobody was biting. fun note wax cylinders are not made of wax but of caustic soap, a non-soluble soap the additive in later wax cylinders is acetate which makes them black and very flammable later cylinders were made of celluloid which normally is quite flammable but burn inhibitors in the material prevent the cylinder from burning like a lid ping-pong ball.

No one has worked on as many of these as I have. I worked at the Quasar Factory Service Center in Los Angeles during the entire 80’s decade. Those VR1000 were the biggest pile of junk ever conceived by man and my worst nightmare. No matter how well I repaired them the thing would boomerang back in less than 90 days. I knew those units inside and out and we usually had 20 or more in for service at any given time. Weakest point is the rewind tire. Even engineering knew it. They changed the black neoprene tire to a white silicone rubber replacement and still it would slip. The record/play switch on the servo/audio panel always had to be replaced. Spraying it just meant the set would be coming back sooner. The take-up motor would get dead spots in it and had to be replaced. Then that stupid idea of the head drive belt that is designed to slip via the servo control brake system. There were 3 sizes of belts for that drum. Part number was a 42-0002A, B, or C. You picked the right one to get the servo brake voltage within spec. Rubber always deposited on the head spindle and cause the belt to stick causing a jerky picture. That always had to be cleaned off. I developed a routine on what had to be done to these to keep them working at least through our 30 day repair warranty. If I just fixed what was wrong at the moment then back it would come with a different issue before the 30 days and we had to eat the labor. I hated those units. If a customer complained enough to Franklin Park (corporate) they would take it back and give the customer a new VHS. Those VR1000s never had a good picture. It looked like an oil painting as the high end detail was smeared all together. I coined the phrase “oil painting effect.” A big loser of a unit and Quassr regretted Japan talking them into it. Before Quasar agreed to market them in the US Japan said they had them out in a Japan test market for a year with no issues. The VHS system was still 2 years out and Quasar wanted to get the jump on the market. Yeah right. It was once said the VR1000 was Japan’s revenge for the bomb.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have one of these, though something seems to be stuck on the sliding/eject mechanism and it won't move past the middle. I've tried opening the machine, but quickly realized I didn't know what I was looking at. This video does a great job explaining the ins and outs of this thing so it should come in handy the next time i'm feeling up to attempting repairs on the thing. I did manage to replace a fuse on it and got it to at least start rewinding the tape that's stuck inside, but then a capacitor exploded. I unplugged it immediately and I haven't really messed with it much since.

I haven't messed with it since then, because I moved to another state & its been in storage ever since. However, I recently found a film I'd been looking for - and it's only available on VHS (the company that owns distribution rights went belly up back in the '90's), so...
